Here’s how the leadership vote works —
SENATE: Democratic senators pick their leader by secret ballot, behind closed doors, in early December. Chuck Schumer, 75, is the presumptive pick, but faces calls for replacement by:
Juliana Stratton (IL) – She campaigned as the only primary candidate who would not support Schumer for another term.
Abdul El-Sayed (MI) – He has long criticized Schumer’s leadership and called him part of the party’s elite class. He has named Sen. Chris Van Hollen as his preferred replacement.
Adam Hamilton (KS) – Said he wouldn’t support Schumer and that the job should go to a younger Democrat who can unite both parties.
Peggy Flanagan (MN) – Has voiced opposition to Schumer for another term.
Troy Jackson (ME) – Has voiced opposition to Schumer for another term.
HOUSE: Two steps. Democrats nominate in private (likely Nov. 18–19). Then on Sun., Jan. 3, all 435 members vote (documented roll call). Hakeem Jeffries, 56, needs a majority of votes cast.
